Rule # 1: Skin care products should be all natural and all organic

Before we go into the benefits of going naturally and organically, lets define some terms first.

Natural - According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), it is A substance derived from mineral, plant or animal material and does not undergo a synthetic process. This means that if it is not artificial and not grown in a laboratory, it can be defined as natural according to the USDA standards.

Organic - Although the USDA has the National Organic Program (NOP) and the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB), there are currently no specific standards for organic skin care and cosmetics. As a rule of thumb, organic products are produced without the use of synthetic fertilizers or chemicals. According to USDA, any product with less than 70 percent non-organic ingredient can not be marketed as an organic product.

So why is it important to choose natural and organic products? Statistics show that our skin absorbs more than 60 percent of what we put on it. On average, women absorb more than 200 different types of chemicals through their skin care products. This accumulates to about 5 kg of chemicals annually. Which means if you have used skin care products from when you were in your teens, you would have absorbed a staggering 35 kg when you are in your 20s. Yuk!

Rule # 2: All types of skin care products should be paraben-free

For more than 70 years, parabens have been used as a cheap and effective preservative of cosmetic and cosmetic brands for their products. However, recent studies have shown that parabens have a direct correlation with increasing the risk of breast cancer, both in men and women.
